2015年 11月 20日 How to improve your reciting is…

Hello, everyone.

My recent routine is to strengthen my inner muscle.

 I’m Ikumi Iizuka 😎

I guess you are surprised why this article is written in English.

Today’s topic is reciting, in Japanese, called「音読」.

What I want to tell you is how to improve the way of your reading aloud.

Because I am a SILS student, I am going to write in English.

If you find some mistakes, please tell me secretly…

Hiroshi Imai, one of the most famous English teacher in prep school, says “By reading aloud with 5 to 10 times, you would certainly understand the contents of passage.”

Recently, many teachers recommend students to recite English sentences. Following this trend, in Toshin, there are many students to do that like shouting. However, without fully understanding, it definitely makes no sense, or leads to even waste of time to read passage with uttering. Thus, I give you some tips about reciting.

1 Before reciting, search the meanings of any vocabulary you do not know.

2 Make sure that what your target of reciting is.

3 Pretend to be as if you were a native speaker of English.

First, identifying words you cannot understand is a good way to enhance level of your reading aloud. After reading passage, there may be some unclear words or phrases. Since they would prevent you from understanding main points or structure of the sentences, you should check and highlight what they are. Once you know the meanings or parts of them, you can have clearer understanding of the passage as reciting.

Second, perceiving the goal of your reciting is undoubtedly important. No matter how hard you read English passage aloud, you may not be able to achieve something on no purpose. Therefore, when you are reciting, you should make a target. To give an example, if you are not good at reading English quickly, try to read passage at as high speed as you can. If your target is understanding sentences, you should check the structure of them (what is subject or verb, how adjectives qualify nouns, where adverb block ends, etc.).Like this, you should know your weak point and strengthen it by reciting.

Finally, while reading English passage aloud, make sure to be like a native speaker. I often hear students do that in hollow, Japanized English like katakana. It means only pursuing the printed characters. Thus, you ought to pronounce English properly. For example, discriminate pronunciation of “r” and “l”, highlight discourse marker such as “however”, and make contrast on speed, and so on. It may enable you to strengthen not only reading, but also listening skills of you.

Can you understand the way to improve your English skills? If you are not certain, please ask us.

English is not the subject to study, but to learn.

I hope you do achieve your goal and realize your dream.

DON’T STUDY ENGLISH AT YOUR DESK!!!!!
